Talking about the current scenario, if you click on the chat button present in the Facebook app, it will take you to the Messenger app. In case you don’t have the Messenger app installed, the button will redirect you to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

The Messenger app currently has over 1.3 billion users. The company is not planning to remove the Messenger icon from the Facebook app but instead of taking you to the other app, it will directly take to a section called Chats.

Facebook has already upset millions of users by removing the chat section from its main app in 2014 and launched a standalone app called Messenger. However, it seems they are on a way to achieve something different. Mark Zuckerberg is planning to integrate Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp into a single platform by 2020.

“The integration that we’re thinking about, we’re really early in thinking through this. There’s a lot more we need to figure out. I think it’s the direction we should be going with more things in the future,” Zuckerberg said in January.

The company also claims that tens of millions of users who use Messenger as their default app on their Android would be benefitted with end-to-end encryption which they will get by default.

Messenger is a popular and feature-rich messaging app used by billion of users. If Facebook becomes successful in merging everything into one app, I think it would be a significant change for both the company and users.
