How to Turn Your Flashlight On and Off

1. Use the Quick Settings Flashlight Tile

For the majority of users, this is going to be their go-to option when it comes to accessing a flashlight on their smartphone. Simply access the Quick Settings menu, and tap on the icon to turn on your flashlight. Follow the steps mentioned below to access the option: 

Step 1: Click on the Pencil icon after you swipe down the status bar. 

Step 2: Scroll down until you find the Flashlight. 

Step 3: You can simply long-press the Flashlight tile and drag it to your preferred location. 

Step 4: Once you are finished, you can simply tap the back arrow. 

Step 5: Now access the Quick Settings menu, and you have the Flashlight tile within your reach. 

Step 6: Simply tap on the Flashlight to toggle it on/off. 

Note: For all the frequent users of the Android Flashlight, you should always consider placing the Flashlight in one of the first four tiles within the Quick Access menu. Based on the smartphone, you can also directly access the flashlight from the lock screen. 

2. Summon Google Assistant to Turn on the Flashlight

Over the years, Google Assistant has refined itself, and can easily perform minute tasks for you. Similarly, you can also use Google Assistant to turn on Flashlight on your smartphone. Here’s how you can do it: 

Step 1: At first, you need to summon Google Assistant. Based on your device, you can always swipe from the corner, followed by ‘Hey Google’ or ‘OK Google’ to wake the assistant. Similarly, you can also double-tap on the back of the device, if that is supported as well. 

Step 2: You can say or type the phrase, ‘Turn on flashlight.’ There are a few variations to the command as well. You can also use ‘Flashlight On’ or simply ‘Flashlight.

Step 3: The Flashlight opens with a popup. 

Step 4: Once you are finished using the Flashlight, you can tap to turn it off. 

Note: To turn it off, you can also use commands such as ‘Turn off flashlight,’ ‘Flashlight off,’ or simply ‘Off.

3. Use the Quick Tap Flashlight Option in Android 13

If your smartphone is running Android 12 or above, you can always use the Quick Tap feature, which allows you to perform multiple tasks by tapping on the back of your smartphone. But with Android 12, it lacked one of the most vital features, including the Flashlight. 

This is where with Android 13, you can easily double-tap at the back of your smartphone to use the Flashlight. In order to access the Quick Tap feature on your smartphone, follow the steps mentioned below: 

Step 1: At first, open Settings, and go to System > Gestures > Quick Tap

Step 2: Press the Use Quick Tap button to turn on the feature. 

Step 3: Now, you need to scroll down until you find the Flashlight option. Toggle to select the option. 

Step 4: Now, simply double-tap on the back of your smartphone to ensure that the Quick Tap feature is being detected. 

Step 5: Close the Settings option. 

Step 6: In order to check, you can double-tap on the back of your phone to turn on the Flashlight. You can also turn it off accordingly.  

Step 7: If you are likely to trigger the functionality by accident, you can also set up a stronger tap within the settings. 

Note: Bear in mind, the Quick Tap feature is not available on every Android phone. 

4. Shake Your Phone to Turn on the Flashlight 

Previously we have discussed one of the most common methods that are available natively to the Android OS to access Flashlight. Similarly, you can also use third-party applications such as the Shake Flashlight to get the function on any smartphone. In order to get started, you can follow the steps mentioned below: 

Step 1: At first, download the Shake Flashlight app. 

Step 2: Once the main screen of the app appears, tap on the power button

Step 3: You need to enable permissions to the camera for the Shake Flashlight app to work properly. 

Step 4: The Flashlight will immediately turn on. 

Step 5: You can shake the phone to turn off the flashlight. 

Step 6: For any inconsistency in the shake motion, go back to settings and change the Shake Sensitivity accordingly. 

Step 7: You can also adjust your device sensitivity accordingly. 

5. Set Up Custom Google Assistant Flashlight Command 

While this method is still similar to the Google Assistant command we have mentioned earlier, you can actually create a dedicated button to open Flashlight directly. Simply follow the steps mentioned below: 

Step 1: Head to the Google Play Store and download Action Blocks app. 

Step 2: Open the app and tap on ‘I Agree.

Step 3: Select the Create action block option. 

Step 4: Head over to Create custom action. 

Step 5: Once the Action textbox appears, type in flashlight on and tap on Test action. This should turn on your flashlight. You can also turn it off to close the screen. 

Step 6: Tap on Yes to proceed forward. 

Step 7: Tap on Next

Step 8: You can rename the custom action. Save the action as Flashlight on

Step 9: Tap on Next to the ‘Add to home screen’ message. 

Step 10: Tap on ‘Add to home screen’ button. 

Step 11: Select ‘Go to home screen.

Step 12: If everything works as intended, you should be able to see the ‘Flashlight on’ button right on your home screen. 

Step 13: You can use the button to turn on the flashlight and use the Google Assistant screen to turn it off.
