While the 12th gen processor from Intel is all over the news, the company has dropped another bomb with the unlocked core i9-12900KS. With a max clock speed of 5.5GHz, Intel is claiming the chipset to be the world’s fastest desktop processor. Here’s what we know about the processor.
Everything the Core i9-12900KS has to offer
At its core, the 12900KS shares huge similarities with its 12900K predecessor. Offering a total of 16 cores, the i9-12900KS comes with 8 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. The chipset can also handle up to 24 threads, with 30 MB of L3 cache.
Intel has also boosted its TDP from 125W to 150W, allowing the processor to run unlocked. As far as the claim is concerned, two of its core can reach up to 5.5GHz, as compared to 5.2GHz for 12900K.
This is where Intel is positioning the processor for gaming enthusiasts. According to Marcus Kennedy, the general manager for Gaming and Esports at Intel, the company strives to streamline desktop gaming, with their 12th Gen processors. Even with a 300MHz boost, Intel wants to take overclocking to the next level.

AMD’s Take on Core i9-12900KS
If you have been keeping track, team red has also claimed the same title earlier this month. This is when they announced their Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor. Although AMD is using an older model as its base, the Ryzen 7 5800X, they have introduced a completely new concept.
The 3D V-Cache is targeted toward delivering speed and should come on top of the current Core i9-12900K. While the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is almost half the price at $449, as compared to what Intel is offering, it takes a significant hit on sheer processing power.
The Ryzen 7 can hit a maximum clock speed of 4.5GHz, to that of Intel’s 5.5GHz. Then again, it is too early to hail Intel as the clear winner, since the Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPU would launch in the second half of the year.
The Bottom Line
So that was all about Intel’s latest launch of the unlocked Core i9-12900KS. The processor is going to be available from 5th April at an MSRP of $739. Bear in mind, this is already a significant boost from the $589 Core i9-12900K.
