Famous Chinese smartphone manufacturing company Huawei has recently announced a new file system Extended Read-Only File System or ‘EROFS’ for its smartphones. This new file system will be improving the performance of Huawei smartphones, especially in terms of read-write speeds.

Xiang Gao from Huawei describes EROFS as a compression-friendly read-only file system for resource-scarce smartphones. It’s an open-source Linux file system that claimed to outperform existing compressed read-only file systems to a great extent.

How will EROFS perform better than other file systems?

In a press note by the company, it claims that EROFS will deliver improvements on a lot of fronts. Not only it will offer storage improvements like helping save on storage space, but it’ll also enhance speed and disk performance.

As far as the read speed is concerned, there’ll be up to 200% increase in this speed due to EROFS. The new file system can also save up to 2GB of internal storage space.

You can launch large apps and games faster, with an increase in app start-up speed by 10%. When it comes to reading files like videos, documents, or music, EROFS will ensure a higher response rate.

But a new file system configuration doesn’t mean upgrading the storage itself. For example, the UFS 3.0, which is three times faster than UFS 2.1, is upgraded storage hardware.

Currently, the new file system is only available to the flagship Huawei P30 Pro users. But the company has confirmed its plans to roll out the Extended Read-Only File System to Huawei Nova 3i, Huawei P20 Lite, Huawei Y9, Huawei P30 Lite, and other Huawei smartphones by the end of July 2019.

Apart from EROFS, Huawei is set to bring the GPU Turbo 3.0 to the P30 Lite, Huawei Y9, Nova 3i, and P20 Lite. Along with reducing SoC power consumption by 10%, the GPU Turbo 3.0 optimizes the system performance for gaming. It delivers an average frame rate and reduces frame drops while improving touch response at the same time.

The company is also updating its Mate 9 Pro, Mate 9, Honor 8 Pro, Honor 9, and other 2017 Huawei models with EROFS and the GPU Turbo 3.0 feature.
