After huge anticipations, India is going to hold the 5G spectrum auction in May this year. The announcement for the 5G spectrum auction was made during the Union Budget 2022. Here’s the details on how the Indian Government is going to begin the auction, and what it holds for the future of 5G in India?
More About the 5G Spectrum Auction
The report suggests that the 5G spectrum auction would commence in May 2022, given the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) successfully submits the recommended auction roles by March.
This information directly correlates, after the assurance of Telecom Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw. He suggests that TRAI is going to submit all the recommended rules and regulations by March. As for the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), they are also working on further processes required to carry to auction on time.
Over the 5G spectrum auction, Telecom Secretary K Kajaraman commented (via ET Telecom), “TRAI has indicated that they will send it (recommendations) by March. Thereafter, it will take us a month to make a decision around it”.
Even in the past, the Government of India took somewhere between 60 to 120 days before starting the auction for previous iterations of the network. So, the 5G spectrum auction should commence in a similar fashion. Although, over time we will learn the exact date of the auction.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman suggests that commercial use of 5G would start somewhere between 2022 and 2023. The private telecom companies including Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Airtel are already in line.
Not to mention, these telecom companies have already started conducting 5G trials in India. Being almost 10x faster than conventional 4G LTE, 5G can open a whole new world of possibilities in India. It plays a huge role in promoting business growth and job opportunities for the people in India.
